In the rental industry, a lighting tower is more than just a piece of equipment; it is a high-utilization asset. When a unit is sidelined for repairs, it isn’t just a maintenance cost it’s lost rental income.
To ensure your fleet achieves maximum durability and remains site-ready for years, maintenance must move beyond “fixing what’s broken” to a proactive strategy. Here is how to maintain the most critical components of your lighting towers to ensure they survive the rigors of the rental market.

1. The Powerhouse: Engine and Alternator Care
The engine is the heart of the tower, often running 12+ hours a day in extreme conditions. In a rental environment, engines face two main enemies: neglect and low-load glazing.
- Strict Oil Cycles: While some manufacturers suggest long intervals, rental units should have oil and filter changes every 250 to 500 hours. Fresh oil is the cheapest insurance against engine failure.
- Combatting “Wet Stacking”: Lighting towers often run at low loads, which leads to unburnt fuel buildup in the exhaust (wet stacking). To prevent this, run your units at full load in the yard between rentals to burn off carbon deposits and maintain cylinder pressure.
- Fuel Hygiene: Rental fuel is notoriously dirty. Use high-quality water separators and replace fuel filters frequently to protect injectors from the “algae” and sediment often found in mobile site tanks.
2. The Luminaires: Protecting the LED Investment
The transition to LED has reduced maintenance, but it hasn’t eliminated it. Modern LEDs are sensitive to heat and moisture.
- Thermal Management: LEDs generate significant heat at the base of the chip. If the cooling fins on the back of the lamp head are choked with mud, dust, or nests, the LED life will be cut in half. Pressure wash these fins (on a low setting) regularly.
- Seal Integrity: Inspect the gaskets and lenses for hairline cracks. Even a small amount of moisture ingress can cause a short circuit that kills an entire light panel, leading to an expensive replacement.
3. The Vertical Asset: Mast and Winch Safety
A mast that won’t extend—or worse, won’t retract—is a common cause of “emergency” service calls.
- Dry Lubrication is Key: Avoid thick grease on the mast sections. Grease attracts site dust and sand, creating a grinding paste that destroys the galvanized finish. Instead, use a dry silicone spray or PTFE lubricant that provides slickness without the “stick.”
- Winch & Cable Inspection: Inspect the lifting cables for “bird-caging” or rust. In a rental setting, cables are often stressed by improper leveling. Replace any cable that shows even minor fraying to ensure operator safety.
- Hydraulic Health: For hydraulic masts, check for “creep” (the mast slowly lowering on its own). This usually indicates a seal leak or a valve issue that needs immediate attention before the unit goes back to a client.
4. The Foundation: Chassis and Transport Gear
Lighting towers spend a large portion of their life being towed over corrugated roads and rocky sites.
- Vibration Management: Constant vibration loosens everything. During every pre-hire check, tighten battery terminals and check electrical connections. A loose wire is the most common reason a tower “fails” on-site.
- Corrosion Defense: Rental units take physical beatings. Scratches in the paint lead to rust, which degrades the structural integrity of the trailer. Use cold-galvanizing spray or touch-up paint immediately on any exposed metal.
The Rental Ready Checklist
Use this quick guide for every “Turnaround” inspection:
| Component | Task | Why? |
| Air Filter | Inspect and tap out dust | Prevents engine dusting and fuel waste |
| Battery | Check terminals and fluid levels | Prevents “no-start” service calls |
| Jockey Wheel | Grease the pivot and screw | Ensures easy hitching for the customer |
| Outriggers | Test deployment and locking pins | Critical for wind-stability and safety |
